Happy New Year

ellapuketiro0

Lets be real, new years resolutions are usually unobtainable and last all of a few weeks post Christmas. Normally we feel a bit fat or a bit unhealthy after surviving the Christmas period and so say to ourselves "this year I am going to get abs" or "this year I will drink two liters of water everyday" or "I this year I won't look at my phone in bed".... yeah right.

Its never made much sense to me that we wait until the start of a new year to try become our better selves, and we do this by creating goals, feeling motivated for several weeks and then throwing them out the window and wait for the next January1st to roll around so we can start again. However, we do seem to experience a period of self reflection after the countdown, and this isn't a bad thing! We may as well use that new sense of motivation and inspiration to think of ways that we can make the year ahead better for ourselves and others around us.

Rather than creating "goals" which just by writing out make you feel like a healthier human being and then usually forget about a week later, I have used the first week of January to reflect and think about much easier things I can introduce into my life that don't have a solid end result. That way you won't feel like a shitty person if you don't stick to it but you might experience some positive personal growth.

My 2021 "resolutions" (small changes for bigger happiness) include...

  1. Look Up More - a weird one but I feel like we miss alot by looking at our feet.

  2. Stop turning up to things way too early

  3. Read the news in the morning - widely, with the occasional glance at the far right and left wing papers for good balance

  4. Try a new recipe every week

  5. Use your social media to spread kindness and love (comment more!)

  6. Call your distant pals (don't message, use that actual phone)

  7. Be like a Parisian in terms of health and beauty - enjoyment, simplicity and balance trumps all else.

  8. Try a new weird hobby ( roller-skating/rock climbing/ pottery)

If one of these sticks then that's a good outcome.

Happy New Year.
