While in the rest of the country November is the month where the temps begin to rise and people have their sneaky first dip in the sea for the summer, unsurprisingly it is still arctic in Wellington. So to all you film lovers who need to warm up… here is a list of my favourite films that bring up all the summer feels and will put you in the mood to crack open your Bondi sands, last seasons bikini’s and dance around in your bedroom to the beach boys!
Stand By Me
A classic Stephen King film set during a hot Oregon summer that follows the journey of four naive boys who discover the traumatic truths of the world of grownups. This film is both full of childhood innocence and the silliness of boyhood but at the same time depicts the harsh reality of children discovering how unkind the world can be.
The Parent Trap
Not only a great film for those summer feelings but also one of my all-time favourite films. Lindsay Lohan’s talent shines through this film playing both twins Hallie and Annie, separated at birth after their parents’ divorce. Years later the two girls meet at the summer camp of dreams and decide to switch places to bring their parents back together. The film is set in both London and the USA with beautiful performances by the lovely Natasha Richardson and the feel-good film king Dennis Quaid. Utterly charming and delightful are two words that some up this movie and it will make you wish you were sent to summer camp!
Thelma and Louise
Summed up plainly as, ‘docile housewife Thelma (Geena Davis) accompanies her pal Louise (Susan Sarandon), an independent waitress, on a brief fishing trip. However, Louise kills a man who endeavors to rape Thelma at a bar. The two flee to Mexico’. This film is SO MUCH MORE THAN THIS, it is a film about female friendships, feminism, abuse and freedom and is hands down the best summer road trip movie. 80s fashion, quotes you will remember for ever and unreal scenes of the USA, this film follows two badass women driving a thunderbird from Arkansas to Mexico and you are guaranteed to fall in love. (special shoutout to a shirtless Brad Pitt in his breakout performance).
Lilo and Stitch
You will probably only appreciate this if you watched it as a child, but Lilo and Stich may have been one of the best and weirdest franchises to come out of Disney. Aliens in Hawaii isn’t exactly a convincing concept but for some reason with its clever humour, mature themes and sensational Elvis Presley soundtrack, this movie just works. Once re-watching this movie as an adult, you will whip the Hele Me Lilo soundtrack out every summer, who knew an animated kids film could bring about such vibes?!
The Blue Lagoon
Okay, I know, looking back there is so much that is wrong with this film but my god is it aesthetically pleasing. Released in 1980 starring a very young Brooke Shield’s and Christopher Atkins the story follows a boy and girl who are shipwrecked on a tropical island in the South Pacific. The teenagers try to survive without adult guidance, but soon sexual maturity sets in and nature intervenes. A salacious and sexy story about sexual discovery without the constraints and teachings of society that was draw dropping both at its time of release and still is today! Do yourself a favour and don’t google the legalities at the time surrounding underage actors, enjoy it for what it is - kind of crap but really beautiful.
